As winter approaches, we brace ourselves for shorter days and colder nights. For many, this fills us with dread. But what if we could reframe it as an opportunity for warmth, relaxation and contentment? This is exactly what the Danish concept of hygge is all about… a lifestyle approach that turns the winter season into a time to embrace comfort and coziness.
What is Hygge?
Hygge (pronounced hoo-gah) is all about creating a cozy atmosphere and enjoying the simple pleasures of life, particularly when it’s dark and cold outside. Like an ‘intentional’ relaxation, lighting candles, snuggling into soft blankets and sipping hot drinks. Hygge encourages us to slow everything down and switch off.
Instead of dreading the darker evenings, hygge teaches us to lean into them.
Here are 3 ways to bring hygge into your winter routine:
1) Create a Warm Atmosphere
Dim lighting, candles and soft, warm textures help you transform your home into a winter sanctuary.
2) Enjoy Simple Pleasures: Indulge in things that make you feel good—a hot chocolate, soaking your feet, reading your favourite book whilst waiting for your slow-cooked meal.
3) Creating meaningful connection: Arrange small, cozy gatherings, dinner parties or movie nights so we're not left feeling isolated.
By reframing how we approach this season, we can find some respite from the darkness. There’s not much we can do about the changing seasons, (apart from book a holiday!) but how we choose to respond, that’s mainly down to us. #kirstiesaltercoaching #winterblues #beattheblues
